Home education is the perfect vehicle for those who want to move away from a more structured curriculum style of education to one that allows the learner to set the agenda. This style is often called leaner-managed or informal education. There has been little research into this style of education with regard to children and young people. The most notable exception is ‘Educating Children at Home’ by Dr Alan Thomas. Informal education is a style of education notoriously difficult to define. It at least has these attributes; it is embedded in everyday life without regard to setting, time or age, the curriculum is set by the learner and it has conversation as its central mechanism of decimation. Home education with its inherent flexibility and non-institution nature is ideally suited as a framework from which to practice informal learning. This book seeks to promote this vital and substantial learning style throughout Europe. To do this Learning Unlimited together with Education Heretics Press published the proceedings of a home education conference held in May, 2005 in book form. The first two articles are academic treatises of what learner-managed learning looks like and its relation to home education by Dr. Roland Meighan and Dr. Alan Thomas. The second part of the book will consist of three case studies of informal home educators from France, Germany and Switzerland. The book is published in French, German and English.
