The
32nd effe-Colloquium
took place 13-15 May
2008 in Brussels/Belgium.
Theme:
"From
early childhood curiosity to early school leaving. Compulsory education -
Giving all young people a future"
with Royston Maldoom (Rythm is it!), Mike Davies, Kees Vreugdenhil et al.
This colloquium was recognized as in-service training.
The Colloquium addressed one of the five benchmarks of the EU “Education and Training 2010” work
program, namely the problem of early school leavers: One in six young people in the 27 countries of
the European Union leaves school with no more than lower secondary education and does not
participate in any kind of education
..program.
The opening speech was held by our former vice-president
Robert
Bell.The Colloquium endet with a Hearing in the European Parliament,
hosted by Katherina Batzeli
(speech only in German for the moment), Chairwoman of the Education and
Culture Committee of the European Parliament . The Commissioner for
Education
Ján Figel' and the Chairman of the education committee of the Council
of EU-Education Ministers,
Mirko
Zorman, took also part. The results and recommandations of the effe-Conference
were presented by our vice-president
Fiona Carnie. A lot of attention was also given to the presentation of
the effe-sms-project of
Dirk Höflich with young people.

European Commission opened a Public consultation "Schools
for the 21st Century". This public consultation
addresses all those interested in the development of school
education in Europe. The Commission's consultation document
raises a series of issues that are deemed to be crucial for
schools in Europe (such as schools and key competences,
schools and social inclusion and the role of teachers, among
others) on which contributions are sought. The deadline for
the consultation is 15 October 2007. You will find the
consultation document, available in all the official
EU-languages at:

Saturday, September 15, 2007, a first “International
Freedom in Education Day” (IFED) will take place. There
will be various events around the world, to remind us that
a choice in education has to be free to be successful. The
organisers of this new event especially want to promote
the concept of home education and other forms of

Conference: "Small Schools, Learning from Each Other", in Bicester,
England from 21-22 April 2007. The idea behind this event is to
